Default Bent push rod

My son was driving up a steep incline and bent a rod.

I have one bent push rod on number 3. I haven't looked at the other one, but I plan on replacing both.

I originally thought I had an injector issue on 3 and 5. Cylinder contribution test showed 18.0 on both cylinders 3 & 5 at idle. I have two injectors to replace both of them.

Can I replace the rods and hope for the best?

DO you see anything else I can check without tearing out the heads?

Is there a special procedure other than taking the rocker arm off and replacing the rod?

I'm no expert but I have bent a rod in two of my trucks. I took the heads off. But I think I didn't need to. I would just take the rocker arms off and tap on the valve ( just to make sure that it has been freed in the valve stem bushing) and put a new rod(s) in and see what happens.

I think I'll do that.

The Ford dealer and all Parts stores doesn't carry the rods. Can you believe that???

5 day shipping from the Ford dealer and one day from Auto Zone with free expedite shipping.

Changing out the old fuel lines on my V2 system while I wait for the rods.

Should have them tomorrow.

From the engine assembly manual.

Rotate the engine until the mark on the crankshaft damper is at 11 o'clock, to prevent damage when installing the intake rocker arm and exhaust rocker arm.

1. Apply clean engine oil to the push rod, and insert the push rod, with the copper end up, into the engine. Make sure the push rod seats onto the lifter.
2. Position the rocker arm onto the cylinder head.
3. Install the bolts to 20 lb/ft.

Hope this helps.
BTW I'm guessing it was the exhaust valve push rod that bent correct.

Just finished the push rods and injectors for 3 & 5. Sent a crap load of oil on my wife's Beamer.

I did forget to fill the HPOP so it takes awhile to start.

I will need to change my injector cups.

Another project down the road.

Thanks for all the help. First push rod issue I've ever had.

I'm going to hang the rod from the Mirror to remind my son that the truck is not a race car and he will be fixing the next valve he floats.

More likely due to extended idling or lots of short trips than 'racing' - but at my house, if it breaks while you are driving it - you've gotta fix it!!!

Default Bent Push Rod

I have a 2001 Excursion with 100,000 veggie miles / 240,000 total miles. Two months ago I bent a push rod. Number 4 cylinder. It took about two hours to replace it and 1000 miles to break it again. Both times I was decelerating to a stop. No high revs, just cruising along. I'm in the process of removing the head and having the valves redone. Not a fun job.
