Coming out the motor had a little lean to it with the missing head and hook not centered well but it was past the point of no return. Ratchet strap was to help with tilt and had very little to do with any lifting.

With the motor clear you can see that signature purple TC that BTS puts on their transmissions.

Motor out! I was unable to mount to the stand.... the bell housing bolts were too short and the head bolts were a little too long to put in without spacers. I'll get the spacers in place to secure the motor well and strip it down soon. Thanks Jon M. for the help.

Had a couple hours to break down the block and found cracks in #1,3&7. That makes 5 out of 8 pistons with cracks. Now I know they are not all the way through but I'm glad I'm doing a rebuild. I'm considering having the new pistons machined but I'm thinking the excursion will rust out before I have any further issues. I'm not looking at making big HP so I should be good with the rebuild. More pics to follow when I break down the bottom end.

It's off to the machine shop for a little measuring and prep before ordering rebuild kit. The guy that runs the garage has an 01 F350 manual trans with 34,000 on the clock. the thing is showroom condition. I asked if he wanted to sell it I thought it was a bit cruel to not use that truck the way it was supposed to be used. I can promise you that the excursion will be used more in the next few years than that 350 ever will.
To be continued............

Fast forward 3 months and the excursion now has a rebuilt motor! There were some issues with a few things but the bottom line is I have a rebuilt motor with .30 over pistons. The rebuild came from Riffraff, the new HPOP came from CNC Fabrication, and the Single Shot 160cc injectors came from Matthew at 406injectors.com
PHP is setting up new tunes for the single shots and I should be set.
Big thanks to Matthew and Jason for helping me through the process.
I now know what it takes to R&R a 7.3
The knowledge gained from this project is something you can't put a price tag on.
