30,000 pounds of grease is going up for auction in Fairbanks

FAIRBANKS — A good deal might slip out of peoples’ hands this weekend as the military auctions off 30,000 pounds of used cooking grease online.

The tons of used vegetable oil are up for auction at govliquidation.com. Bidding started at $150.

The grease is being sold by Government Liquidation, a private contractor, as surplus from the Department of Defense. The tons of vegetable oil were collected for eight months by the Hazardous Waste Processing Facility on Eielson Air Force Base from restaurants, food courts and residential homes.

It is the first time Government Liquidation has sold cooking grease to the public in its 10-year history, according to a company spokeswoman.

When the waste facility used to dispose of the grease, it would cost 40 cents per pound to do so. The auction is a way to “ease the burden on the taxpayers,” said Randy Smith, the Eielson waste facility’s supervisor.

What might people do with 15 tons of used cooking oil? All sorts of things, according to Smith.

People might want to use the grease as bio-diesel fuel or as a heating fuel, Smith said.

In the past, Eielson has sold the grease as, among other things, a supplement for pig food.

Now, though, if there is money to be made from the waste, the military requires it to go through the proper channels. Hence the auction.

The contract allows the winning bidder to leave the grease at Eielson for up to six months, but the buyers have to pick it up on their own. It’s stored in 30-gallon barrels and five-gallon jugs.

Smith said Friday that he has heard of a few interested people already.

The grease can be found at http://www.govliquidation.com/auctio...tionId=4802675.

The auction is open until Monday at 7 p.m.
