I opted for the Bosch unit that Clay recommended...

I opted for the Bosch unit that Clay recommended - so far so good. Getting plenty of heat to the tank and system.

The Bosch does look like a better unit. The plastic housing definitely looks like it's made out of a more durable material.

As others have mentioned, it helps prevent overloading of circuits or wiring, thereby preventing burned up wires.
